Dr. Willem Smuts, Pr.Sci.Nat.
Willem is a geologist with a Masters degree in sedimentology from the University of Port Elizabeth (1987) and a Ph.D. from Pretoria University (1998). He is a registered professional earth scientist with the South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions and has authored and co-authored over 56 scientific and technical papers.
Willem has 22-years of technical and management experience in the fields of research, exploration, mining and consulting across Africa. During the mid-90's Willem participated in CBM exploration and evaluation with AMOCO in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Botswana. He was Country Manager SA and Angola and later Regional General Manager for Halliburton's Landmark Graphics Corporation: Sub-Sahara Africa Region, based out of Nigeria. From November 2004 to February 2008 Dr Smuts was the Managing Editor: Mining, Energy & Equipment at Brooke Pattrick Publications and also the editor of African Mining and Mining Mirror magazines. Since 2006 Willem is chairperson of the African Mining Congress held annually in Johannesburg and he is a regular invited speaker at international meetings and symposia. He has served as a director of LMK Resources (Nigeria) Ltd. Willem is the exploration manager for Lengau Resources in Botswana, exploring for CBM.
Willem independently consults on coal, base and precious metals exploration across Africa and is involved in the development of Inside Mining, a new mining monthly focused on Africa and a global mining news website.
