Howard Palmer | Terrapinn Trainer

What is your background?

Although trained at University as a lawyer I went straight into banking nearly 30 years ago in India and the UK.
All my back ground is in banking in the emerging markets.

How did you get into training?

Almost from the beginning. I really enjoyed the marketing aspect of banking and making internal and client presentations, using acetates and an OHP for those who remember them! I did a Course in education (the Post Graduate Certificate in Education) during a nine month break from banking in the 1980's and from then training was always a major part of  my banking life. At first it was presentations for visiting Overseas Bankers, then on to running public Courses 3 or 4 times a year, whilst still practicing banking. At one point it took over and I realised that my future lay with training as much as banking.

What is yor favourite course that you love to teach?

I would plump for Trade Finance only because I do believe that I have acquired insights into this subject that allow delegates to go back to their assignments not only with extra product knowledge but with a new way of looking at problems they have been experiencing for years and with the ability to comunicate their findings to senior decision-makers.

What training experience are you most proud of?

Training Judges! As a Subject Matter Expert in Banking Practise I do get the opportunity to appear in Court and explain to legal experts who are not bankers how things really work. Generally somebody on the other side is saying the complete opposite!

When it is clear that all parties have really understood the issues and a favourable judgement received, that is one that makes me feel proud.

What makes you unique?

The ability to present and communicate. Nobody ever forgets one of my courses as I am constantly aware that above all, the Course has to be interesting and I will do everything in my power to achieve that.

Why are you passionate about training?

Because it brings change. When I see huge projects take place after a course or consultancy and I know that my training has had a part in it then it builds passion. Nothing brings passion like success.

What else drives you/are you pasionate about (when you are not training)?

My family, that is my wife and 5 children.

I am a truly passionate if not obsessed fisherman and although I gave up hunting many years ago I am passionate about all animals from my domestic pet Jack Russell to packs of wolves.
